Selected Articles of the Last Decade, and Why we Selected Them
- Collins, P. C., S. Koduri, V. Dixit, and H. L. Fraser. “Understanding the Interdependencies Between Composition, Microstructure, and Continuum Variables and Their Influence on the Fracture Toughness of α/β-Processed Ti-6Al-4V.” Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A (2017): 1-16. https://doi.org/10.1007/s11661-017-4443-9
- This paper uses machine learning to help us learn new science about the nature of fracture in titanium alloys, a challenging problem and one of great relevance to users of titanium. We were able to identify a key microstructural feature (a particular and rare type of interface) that was responsible for microcracks. The paper won both the Henry Marion Howe Medal from ASM and the Champion H. Mathewson Award from AIME/TMS. We are deeply honored to have our work recognized in this manner.
- Brian Hayes, Brian Martin, Brian Welk, Sam Kuhr, Thomas Ales, David Brice, Iman Ghamarian, Andrew Baker, Christina V Haden, Gary Harlow, Hamish L. Fraser, Peter C Collins. Predicting Tensile Properties of Ti-6Al-4V Produced Via Directed Energy Deposition. Acta Materialia. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.actamat.2017.05.025
- This paper extends a constitutive relationship for the prediction of yield strength in Ti-6Al-4V to additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V without many modifications, while also demonstrating the strong influence of dislocation density and texture on the mechanical behavior of Ti-6Al-4V.
- Brian Hayes, Brian Martin, Brian Welk, Sam Kuhr, Thomas Ales, David Brice, Iman Ghamarian, Andrew Baker, Christina V Haden, Gary Harlow, Hamish L. Fraser, Peter C Collins. On the prediction of uniaxial tensile behavior beyond the yield point of wrought and additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V. Integrating Materials and Manufacturing Innovation. Available at: https://doi.org/10.1007/s40192-022-00265-4
- This Open Access paper extends the constitutive relationship for the prediction of yield strength in Ti-6Al-4V (including in additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V) to predict the full true stress-strain curves (until the point of necking and plastic instability) by incorporating the Kocks-Mecking-Estrin (KME) model. Importantly, the model is applied to 3 markedly different variants of additively manufactured Ti-6Al-4V, along with wrought material, without the need to modify the physics-based equation.

- This paper is a fun one that establishes a new experimental technique. While many of our earlier papers used a combinatorial approach to probe the influence of composition on the microstructure or properties of a material, this paper demonstrated it was possible to engineer, affect, and control a thermal gradient of a few hundred decrees Celsius over a relatively short distance. It opened up a students thesis to conduct the first bicombinatorial experiments where composition was varied along one axis, an isothermal hold along an orthogonal axis, and a large fraction of a phase diagram contained within a single specimen.
- Collins, P. C., Brice, D. A., Samimi, P., Ghamarian, I., & Fraser, H. L. (2016). Microstructural Control of Additively Manufactured Metallic Materials. Annual Review of Materials Research, 46, pp 63-91. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1146/annurev-matsci-070115-031816
- This paper permitted us to rationalize the effects of processing on composition and microstructure during additive manufacturing. Two of the takeaways led us to better understand how to control texture in additively manufactured metallic materials, and how processing and environment affects composition by invoking work from Langmuir ~100 years ago.
- Liu, Y., Samimi, P., Ghamarian, I., Brice, D.A., Huber, D, Wang, Z., Dixit, V, Koduri, S., Huber, D, Fraser, HL, and Collins, PC, “Discovery via Integration of Experimentation and Modeling: Three Examples for Titanium Alloys”, JOM, 67(1), January 2015, pp 164-178, Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11837-014-1197-3
- This paper presented some of the earliest ideas for a new type of hybrid machine learning (artificial neural networks – genetic algorithms), but it was the suprise selection of some of our earliest work on mapping dislocation densities that was selected for Cover Art for Oct. 2014 JOM.
- C.V. Haden, P.C. Collins, D.G. Harlow, “Yield Strength Prediction of Titanium Alloys” JOM: Volume 67, Issue 6 (2015), Page 1357-1361. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11837-015-1436-2
- This paper is a prime example that sometimes some ideas run outside the normal research areas (hence, may receive fewer citations). Here, led by our intrepid collaborators at Lehigh University, we took a model for yield strength of Ti-6Al-4V and applied it within a statistical framework, we were able to tune the model in statistical space, and generate “design allowable” like curves (probability distribution functions) that you could achieve a given property for a given process. But, not all materials scientists gravitate towards statistical analysis.
- Ghamarian, I, Samimi, P, Dixit, V, and Collins, PC, “A constitutive equation relating composition and microstructure to properties in Ti-6-4 – as derived using a novel integrated computational approach”, Met Trans A, 46(11), 2015, pp 5021-5037, Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11661-015-3072-4
- This paper presented the earliest ideas for a new type of hybrid machine learning (artificial neural networks – genetic algorithms), and resulted in the first paper to have a constitutive form to predict strength in Ti-6Al-4V, as well as an assessment of the role of each strengthening mechanism. This still provides the basis for much of our current work.
- M.D. Harris, W.J. Grogg, A. Akoma, B.J. Hayes, R.F. Reidy, E.F. Imhoff, P.C.Collins, “Revisiting (some of) the Lasting Impacts of the Liberty Ships Via A Metallurgical Analysis of Rivets from the SS John W. Brown”, JOM: Volume 67, Issue 12 (2015), Page 2965-2975. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/s11837-015-1668-1
- This paper was a fun and serendipitous paper. A friend of my extended family had been a newspaper reporter for the Baltimore Sun, and had written a few books on the Liberty Ships based upon his personal experience in helping to document and restore one of the few remaining ones. He also happened to have both original rivits and modern restoration rivists. From these, we had some very talented undergraduate students conduct an analysis – both metallurgical and historical – of these great ships. We could tell the stories of terrific scientists, such as the incomparable Constance Tipper.
- Samimi, P, Liu, Y, Ghamarian, I, Song, J, and Collins, PC, “New observations of a nanoscaled pseudomorphic bcc Co phase in bulk Co-Al-(W,Ta) superalloys”, Acta Materialia 69 (2014): 92-104. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.actamat.2014.01.056
- Sometimes what you get is not at all what you expected. Here, we were aiming to demonstrate that combinatorial approaches could be used to study interesting Co-based superalloys. While we did demonstrate that, it was the surprising of bcc (body centered cubic) cobalt that formed, patterned on the B2 intermetallic phase that formed the heart of the paper.
- Iman Ghamarian, Yue Liu, Peyman Samimi, Peter C. Collins, “Development and application of a novel precession electron diffraction technique to quantify deformation structures in a highly deformed material – ultrafine grained titanium”, Acta Materialia 79 (October 2014), pp. 203-215, Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.actamat.2014.06.063.
- This was our first paper on mapping dislocation densities using precession electron diffraction with a resolution of ~2nm. We still think there is very interesting work in this space, but in certain ways, it demonstrated an exciting and new experimental techniques.
- Samimi, P., Liu, Y., Ghamarian, I., and Collins, PC, “A novel tool to assess the influence of alloy composition on the oxidation behavior and concurrent oxygen-induced phase transformations for binary Ti–xMo alloys at 650° C” Corrosion Science 89 (2014): 295-306. Available at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.corsci.2014.09.010
- This was another fun methods development paper. We exploited our earlier work of combinatorial studies to focus on the effect of alloy composition on the oxidation mechanisms. By grading the composition and exposing a single specimen to a particular atmosphere, we could hold one variable fixed (atmosphere) and study the effects of alloy composition on growth rates, oxide stabilities, and more. This led to companion studies and publications in the Ti-xW, Ti-xCr, and Ti-xAl system, as well as studies of industrially used alloys.
