Title: Welding and Additive Manufacturing of Metallic Materials: Fabrication, Testing, and Computation

Abstract: Welding and additive manufacturing are two important technologies in advanced manufacturing. However, the quality and mechanical properties of the welded and additively manufactured components depend on various process parameters, material properties, microstructure distribution, defects types and sizes, distortion and residual stress, and many other factors. In this talk, I will discuss the similarities and differences between welding and additive manufacturing, and some testing examples for these two processes. In addition, I will explain how to apply experiments, modeling, data analysis, and machine learning for welding and additive manufacturing processes to optimize process conditions, reduce defects, and improve the mechanical properties of manufactured parts. Some examples of welding and additive manufacturing are provided. I will also briefly introduce some emerging technologies that are being applied to advanced manufacturing and my plans about teaching, proposals, mentoring, and diversity.
